Pechersk Lavra

We went to Lavra on April 21st. It was originally built as a cave monastery in 1051! It is very old! But a lot of it has been rebuilt or reconstructed since then. Lavra is a very important center of Eastern Orthodox Christianity and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's almost like a small town because there are so many buildings! I think it would take an entire day to see everything. We saw the caves where lots of monks have been buried. Their caskets are glass, but most of the bodies are covered. There are over a hundred burials there and they go back as far as the 11th century! It's crazy! Honestly, the caves themselves were kind of underwhelming, but after I got home and learned more about them online, I thought it was pretty cool that they are that old.
